Accessibility

Everyone should be able to read this

We want this site to work for people who use a screen reader, a keyboard only, large text, a slow phone, or who prefer to listen. This page says what is in place, what is not yet, and how to tell us when something is in your way.

What is in place

  • Keyboard. Everything works without a mouse. A "Skip to content" link is the first thing the Tab key reaches, and the focused element is always outlined.
  • Screen readers. Pages use proper headings, landmarks and lists. Every image has a description. Kannada and Tulu text is marked as such, so a screen reader can switch voice.
  • Text size. The text scales with your browser's zoom and text-size settings up to 400% without anything being cut off or needing sideways scrolling.
  • Contrast. Text and background colours meet the AA contrast ratio in both the light and the dark look. The dark look follows your system setting and can be switched with the button at the top.
  • Motion. If your device asks for reduced motion, the animated banner is shown as a still picture. Otherwise there is a pause button under it. Nothing flashes.
  • Listen. Each page has a "Listen to this page" control that reads the text aloud with the voices installed on your device, with pause, speed and voice choice. It does not send the text anywhere.
  • No time limits, no pop-ups except the one question about counting visits, which can be answered with the keyboard.

Known limitations

  • The Kannada and Tulu pages are drafts and have not yet been checked with a screen reader by a native speaker.
  • Read-aloud depends on the voices on your device. Most phones have an English voice. Kannada voices exist on Android (Google Text-to-speech) and on some iPhones; there is no Tulu voice anywhere, so Tulu pages are read with a Kannada voice and some sounds come out wrong.
  • Tulu in its own script is not yet supported by browsers and fonts, so the Tulu pages use the Kannada script.
  • We have not yet tested with every screen reader. Tested so far: VoiceOver on macOS, automated checks (axe) on every page.

How we check

Every release is tested at screen widths from 320 to 2000 pixels, in light and dark, for text that overflows, images that fail, missing descriptions, contrast, keyboard focus and other accessibility rules (the axe-core rule set). A release that fails does not go live.
